Paradise Valley Cafe to Hurkey Creek State Park
Boy it was nice to sleep in till 8:00 AM today. We have a 9 mile hike that follows a road with very little ups or downs, so why not start a little later.
We we left the campground and headed back to Paradise Valley Cafe to walk back to the campground. It sucks than the trail is closed to the town of Idyllwild, but at least there is a doable detour. Because of the trail closure many hikers actually choose to hitch a ride the 20 miles to Idyllwild instead if hike there. But not I. I am bound and determined to walk to Canada with a countinuos trail of footsteps.
So, here we are back at Paradise Valley Cafe for a day of road walking and some hiking.

We may have to do a road walk today, but at least the road is beautiful.
After about 4 miles the private property ended and National Forest began. We were then able to go through a fence and walk on a nice trail that runs parellel with the road.
The trail then joined a power line road for about 1 mile then took us back to the highway for the last 2 miles. Right when we got back on the road we saw a white pickup truck with a bunch of hikers in the bed. I knew this was a group of hikers that decided to hitch from the cafe to Idyllwild. We made sure to give them a big wave so they could see 46-year-olds hiking the road as they, young ones, take the easy hitch.
Soin after, Tim actually pulled up on the road to see how we were doing. At that point we had about 1 mile to go, so he took off and we met him back at the campground right at 3:00 PM.
Brad decided to go home tonight and have his zero day tomorrow. He will then com back to Hurkey Creek State Park on Tuesday to complete the last 10 miles of the detour to Idyllwild and meet up with us on Wednesday morning to continue the hike.
I will be hiking the 10 miles tomorrow and taking a zero the next day in Idyllwild.
For now we are sitting around a campfire that Tim has made and am looking forward to hitting the castle tent for the second night in a row.

Oh...I never showed you the inside of the tent. Well, here it is...a queen-size blowup mattress with headboard included. This is the way to camp.
