We rented a narrowboat and will be traveling the canals of England from 4 - 25 April 2022.
TRANSPORTATION THERE: We will be flying into London from Cleveland via JFK on 30 March. Since it is usually expensive to fly out of Cleveland to Europe, we usually take Amtrak from Cleveland to New York and then fly from JFK to Europe. However, I found one-way tickets from Cleveland to London for $465 each. This is more than we usually pay, but for a direct flight from Cleveland, we were willing to pay it.
TRANSPORTATION BACK: Notice we purchased one-way tickets. We will fly to Greece on 30 April, after our narrowboat holiday, and travel around Eastern Europe for 4 months. We have a cruise booked from London to New York on 2 September 2022 to return to the United States. Of course, our Eastern European trip is not definite and depends on the worldwide COVID situation and the Ukraine war. Hopefully this trip will occur and we will blog all about.
WHAT IS A NARROWBOAT: Since arriving on this page, I bet you have been asking what a narrowboat is. Here is what our narrowboat will look like:

This is narrowboat Fjord Princess. She is 52 feet long...yes 52 FEET LONG and less than 7 feet wide. She is fitted out with a kitchen, dining area, lounge area, sleeping berth for 2, and a full bathroom with a shower. Tim and I are quite familiar with Fjord Princess since we rented her for 2 weeks back in October 2019.

When we say that we are going on a narrowboat holiday, it means we rented the narrowboat, which we pilot ourselves along the roughly 2,000 miles of canals. These canals date back to the 1770's and were used to transport goods. Back then, horses pulled the boats through the canals from the towpath along canals. Today, the canals are use for recreation and the boats are powered by diesel engines. Here is a map of all the canals in the UK.
When you pick up the boat, they give you a 30 minute lesson on how to
drive the boat and how to work the locks. Oh yeah...the canals you
navigate have many, many locks you have to negotiate. The photos below
shows a lock. The boat enters the lock, the gates are closed, and the
water is either raised or lowered depending on which direction you are
traveling. It is our responsibility to work these locks which takes a
little bit of training and understanding.
We are renting our boat from Andersen Boats in Middlewich. Look at the map to the right so you can follow our current plan:

Here are the final numbers from our completed trip:
- Total miles - 224 miles (11.2 average per day)
- Total hours underway - 125 hours (6.25 average per day)
- Total locks - 151.5 locks (8 average per day)
- Swing / Draw bridges - 23 moved bridges (1 average per day)
