Civita
After Rome, we arrived in Orvieto by train and picked up our next rental car, the Fiat 500X. Before checking into our quarters in Orvieto, we drove out 25 minutes to Civita. The town gets its popularity from the fairy tale look of the place. This was another bit of a workout - you walk down to the bridge, and then up to the town, and then take a breather for a few minutes.

Through the arched entrance, and you're there! See the open-to-sky windows below - the backside fell into the valley some years back.
On the town's square - four ATVs and scooters are the only means to take vehicles into town now. A more level and substantial ridge had previously connected the town to the surrounding villages, but earthquakes took that away.
Over the centuries earthquakes have continued to want to bring the town down - see the angled support on the building to the left, and the bracing of the church's bell tower.
Still, quaintness and charm remains.
A small farm down in the valley - a preview of the countryside to come.
With the isolation from the modern world, very few people actually live in the town today.
Orvieto
And then we checked into Orvieto and found a Michelin listed restaurant. This is the artichoke.

A nighttime stroll...
This star, or more probably a planet, was twinkling under the Moon.
A sunny morning in Orvieto.
All these towns of antiquity - built on mountaintops, giving great views of the countryside.
Assisi
The town of St Francis of Assisi - here is the grand cathedral/monastery built in his name. We saw several Franciscan Monks coming to visit the town of the man that made them who they are.

Remnants of Roman structures (an amphitheater here) incorporated into the town.
A protecting castle looming above the town.
Sunset in Assisi. The Italians sure know how to showcase their cultural treasures with fantastic lighting at night.
