Lake Livingston State Park - Silsbee, TX
Another night of perfect temperatures (mid 40’s) to sleep in. I actually woke just before the alarm went off which is always nice. We aren’t leaving till 9 AM, so a 7:15 AM alarm isn’t too bad. When I went to the RV, everyone that wasn’t feeling well yesterday was feeling better now. After a good (long) night sleep, Mel and Bill was feeling much better. Jackie seemed better and Jim was better, but still not 100%. However, Mary and Tim, the last 2 riders standing was not feeling the best.
We left just after 9 AM hoping everyone will make it through the day. At our first 15 mile stop it seemed that Tim was pretty questionable. We knew that Patrick was going to meet us around the 40 mile point, so Tim decided that he could make it to that point. I called Patrick just in case to give him the heads ups. He said that he would take our same route, so if Tim needed picking up he wouldn’t be far. Good thing for that since when we got to 27 miles, Tim was done.
About 20 minutes later Patrick showed up and we had a nice break with the RV and Tim loaded his bicycle on the back of the RV. This darn virus has gotten everyone (except Patrick)!
Since we met Patrick at 27, it was decided that we didn’t need him at the 40 mile point, so we was cleared to go to the RV park to set up camp and take care of Tim.

We did a roadside stop at 42 miles and took a break at an Exxon station in Kountze, TX at mile 56. This left 12 miles to our home for the night. We arrived at the Red Cloud RV Park just before 4 PM after one of the easiest riding day I think we had. The perfect weather and the lack of climbing made it a great day. Tim was chilling in the RV and not feeling too great. I made him Gatorade which seemed to bring back some color (he even asked for seconds). Mary set up her tent, took a shower, and took a nap to hope that she would feel better. I was stuck setting up the tent without Tim’s help, but I guess it is payback when he set it up when I wasn’t feeling well a couple of days ago.
While setting up camp, another cross-country cyclist showed up. He is riding west from Pensacola, Florida to San Diego…pretty cool. Oh…I rode on the back of the tandem 0.6 miles to a grocery store. It was fun and scary at the same time. I don’t think Mel has to worry about me stealing her seat.
As we were hanging around the camp, music starting playing. There is a Honky Tonk bar right next door to the RV park called “Honky Tonk Texas.” Of course we had to check it out, so Mel, Bill, Jim, and I went over for a beer. We were the only ones in shorts and pretty much didn’t belong, but we enjoyed our drinks and returned to the RV Park just before 8 PM (bedtime around here).
When I got to the tent at 8 PM, Tim was already in “bed.” Hopefully he feels better enough in the morning to ride, but I think he will need at least one more day to recover…we will see. As I type this blog, this isn’t the quietest RV park with the honky tonk next door and US Highway 96 running right past it.
According to Google, the bar closes at midnight, so the thumping of the bass will continue for 4 more hours. The highway will never quiet. The past 5 night we have stayed in quiet state parks and national forest areas. I guess tonight we pay the price. The plan is to leave at 9 AM, so the alarm is set for 7:15 AM…not too bad. It’s only 9 PM now, so I have a couple of hours to play on my phone and get some reading in. Sounds like a perfect evening.
