Today we ride the train about 2 hours from south to north on the island of Kyushu. We'll just stay one night in Fukuoka before catching the ferry to Busan, South Korea. In about 2 weeks we'll come this way and do a few days touring of Fukuoka, before pressing on in Japan.
Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a Japanese festival celebrated from the 1st until the 15th of July. The festivities are centered on the Kushida Jinja shrine. The festival is famous for the Kakiyama floats that weigh around one ton and are carried around the city as an act of float-racing. The festival is believed to be over 770 years old and attracts up to a million spectators each year. Unfortunately we'll just be finishing up Korea when the "big race" goes down.
Upon arrival in Fukuoka we find one of the floats right at the train station.
