July 29
It's the Flixbus to Oslo today!
Picture

July 30
In the morning, first on the agenda, to the Nobel Peace Center (we'll visit there later) (formerly the train station) to buy a 3-day metro museum pass (The Oslo City Pass).
Picture
A fishing boat berthed just below City Hall (we'll visit there later also)...
Picture
Our city walk tour begins at the Bronze Tiger statue...
Picture
(Cue vinyl-record stylus screeching) -- We divert and end up at the Munch Museum to start our Day 1 Oslo touring -- the weather has us on edge today, "will it rain, will it shine,..." -- let's goto the art museum!
Picture
Before we stand in front of paintings and contemplate the significance of art, we head up to the top floor to get a high view of the modern city scape.

Now on the floor featuring the man himself...
Picture
Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter.  His 1893 work The Scream  became one of Western art's most acclaimed images.   We'll see it a bit later.
Picture
"Two Girls with Blue Aprons"; self-portrait at age 25.
Picture
The Katarina Elevator (1881-1936; painting from 1934), used by pedestrians to move to different levels of Oslo; we would use the replacement version a bit later in our Oslo adventures.
Picture
And now........................here it is.......................
Picture
We start with a viewing of a wood-cut relief printing -- 3-versions of "The Scream" are rotated through the day in a special exhibit space to limit exposures to the "elements".
Picture
"The agonized face in the painting (1893) has become one of the most iconic images in art, seen as symbolizing the anxiety of the human condition. Munch's work, including The Scream, had a formative influence on the Expressionist movement."
Picture
About 25-minutes later, the one known by most appears before our eyes, and 137 other eyeballs.
Picture
Picture
..the face of non-anxiety...
Picture
...we think we were possibly on this trail...

"The Fairy-Tale Forest";

self-portrait age 45.

It's ramen for lunch - yeah, Norwegian cuisine starts out Asian-style for us...

Next up:

"Norway's Resistance Museum also known as the Norwegian Home Front Museum focuses on Norwegian resistance during the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1945. The museum displays equipment, photos and documents from the war years."
Picture
Picture
Picture
Now done with that next museum, just outside, we look over a portion of Oslo Harbor - with the tall ships it looks like the days of old...
Picture

Just around the corner from the resistance museum we notice a castle -- and it's covered by our City Pass!

Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle that was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city.
Picture
The view from a ferry ride we took 2-days later...
Picture
Picture
Picture
The sarcophagi of King Haakon VII and Queen Maud (the white sarcophagus), King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha (the green sarcophagus) -- alive, they stood in the viewing balcony, dead, they lie here in the catacombs for eternity...

"Marimekko Corporation is a Finnish textiles, clothing, and home furnishings company founded in Helsinki in 1951. Marimekko made important contributions to fashion in the 1960s. It is particularly noted for its brightly colored printed fabrics and simple styles, used both in women's garments and in home furnishings."
Picture

"Two designers in particular, Vuokko Nurmesniemi, with bold stripes, and Maija Isola, with large simple flowered prints such as the Unikko poppy, created hundreds of distinctive patterns and helped to make Marimekko a household name across the world."

There are breweries here in Oslo!

Tim, the narrator, is quite artsy in his words and choice of photos. Thanks for seeking out the Marimekko place, from my teen years I loved the designs, and could afford to buy fabric!
