It's suddenly become roasting hot here in Nicosia. There's a bit of wild fire somewheres, but that's miles from here - actually that's back in Turkey. The other warning is for unfavorable conditions for being out and about (8 out 10) - we heed the warning and hang out in our lodging till mid-afternoon. Although that will make it the hottest part of the day, we will limit our exploring time to particular spots. |
"Nicosia is the southeasternmost of all EU member states' capitals. It has been continuously inhabited for over 4,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities of Nicosia segregated into a south and north respectively in early 1964, following the fighting of the Cyprus crisis of 1963–64 that began here. This separation became an island-wide militarized border between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus after Turkey invaded the island in 1974. Since 1989, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nicosia stands alone as the only divided capital city in the world.
Apart from its legislative and administrative functions, Nicosia has established itself as the island's financial capital and its main international business center. In 2018, Nicosia was the 32nd richest city in the world in relative purchasing power."

Walking along the old walls of the city, looking for shade...
Fashions for beating the heat...and Banksy-like alley art.
We now cross over to the Turkish-side of Nicosia, passing through an immigration check-point open since 2003.
After showing our passports to the two sides separated by a no-man's land (the 'green zone'), we pass into a market area in Turkish Nicosia - it easily reminds us of the sights and culture in Turkey.
At the "new" traveller's inn...
...now touring the "old" traveller's inn.
Dinner is pizza, served by a young Pakistani man, who provided excellent service.
And now at a brewery with the most taps in Cyprus, run by a Turkish Cypriot who spent 12-years in Savannah Georgia and learned to love the brewery craft there.
Back in no-man's land, and crossing back to the Greek side of Nicosia, Gerri snaps a selfie along the way.
Almost "home" and back to our air conditioned digs - looks to be another hot one tomorrow.
