Today we do about 200 miles driving, 6 miles walking, and eat 3 fish at Lake Peipus.
How about a 3 1/2 mile hike in a bog, with almost 2 miles of raised "boardwalk" - sign me up!
Welcome to Viru Bog...
Welcome to Viru Bog...
After a short initial walk, we hit the boardwalk...it's pretty nice going...
We get the high view from a 35 foot tower...
Returning to ground level, the boardwalk becomes a 2-boarder at this point...
...and passing passerby's becomes a lean-on-a-tree affair.
The boardwalk, err 2-board walk, is complete and we then hike a flatish ridge-line to finish up.
Just outside the parking spot is a geocache, our one and only in Estonia.
Next we hike an old-growth forest, with a surprise after a spaciously wide trail at the start...
...and then we find, surprise, more boardwalk, covered with wire mesh for traction - and it has begun to lightly rain.
We almost passed on this 2 1/2 miles walk as it'd begun to spit some rain even before we arrived to the parking spot. We thought, oh well, it's supposed to only take about an hour to walk it - so we took our chances on how wet we'd get...
...and yes!, the skies are now looking nicer before we know it.
Any significant ups and downs are equipped with staircases.
Evidence here of sap gatherers from a few years ago
Yes, we made the right choice to try this trail, as the rain is done, and the trail is a nice one.
We even spot a lynx, albeit a faux one, placed here for reasons unknown - probably showing they live in the wild here, but you pretty much will never see a real one.
Now for some vittles, we try out Kolkka Kala-sibula Restaurant on Lake Peipus. The area here is pretty unpopulated with tiny villages and touristy small lodgings here and there. We try out these three fishes.
The seafood was delicious - the one with the "eye" was potatoe-breaded Kingfish, those potatoes with the filleted pike-perch were especially nicely seasoned, and the appetizer, although served cold was just as good as the entrees.
We arrive in Tartu...
