We grabbed an official Tourist Information walking map of Tartu, and started our walkabout.
First up, the astronomical observatory, now a museum.
"Construction of the observatory started in 1808. While it was completed in 1810, setting up the necessary instruments took a few years more. The last of them was the Fraunhofer Great Dorpat Refractor, that was the largest refracting telescope at the time and was constructed in 1824. It has been titled as 'the first modern, achromatic, refracting telescope'. "

Oscar Wilde, meet Eduard Vilde (who most likely never met in real life)..
Apparently the Winter in Tartu is quite severe...
We drop by the market...lotsa potato varieties and fresh fishes...
Now to the Emajõgi river front...
Turing onto Town Hall Square..this leaning house was built in 1793 and now leans 5.8 degrees, greater than Pisa's 3.97 degrees, for the same reasons, an unstable foundation, but both are now stabilized to stop more leaning. At the top of the square are the "Kissing Students".
Back along the river promenade...
Amazing - how do they get all these botanicals to grow so lushly in these northern reaches.
14th century's St. John Church...
"Theater House, in Tartu Old Town, inspired by a museum, forming a part of the Tartu Toy Museum. The Theater House takes its inspiration from our childhood, the games we played, the dreams we had, and the fantasies we brought to life."
A monument to Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632) who founded the University of Tartu:
Main building of the University of Tartu, constructed between 1804 and 1809.
"Tartu Cathedral is a former Catholic church begun in the 13th century and completed in the 15th. The building is now an imposing ruin overlooking the lower town. About a third of the cathedral has been renovated now containing the museum of the University of Tartu, which the university also uses for major receptions."
Now for something to eat...and pizza it is, once again.
